Betsy Jacaruso Gallery to have Pop-up Exhibit of Vintage New York Times Photography Collection During Sinterklaas

(Rhinebeck, New York)…

In addition to the larger curated program on view at Betsy Jacaruso gallery, for two days only (December 4-5), the gallery will unveil a photography display of vintage and rare prints from the New York Times pre-digital-era collection. The exhibit will occur during the weekend of Sinterklaas Festivities, a regional Holiday event drawing many visitors to the Upstate New York area. It will be the first of a series of pop-up art exhibits curated by Todd Pavlisko to be on view at Betsy Jacaruso Gallery.

Photography is the backbone of modern journalism—immediate, dramatic, compelling. The New York Times published its first photo in 1896 and has continued to be a distinguished visual record-keeper of 20th and 21st-century life. The archive was created, at first, as a clipping library and morgue file under the direction of Carr Van Anda in 1907. Photographic images were later added when the clipping collection was merged with the New York Times art department's photography library. As a result of the archive, the newspaper decided to make some of its seven million images available as fine prints for purchase.

The selection of large silver-gelatin prints on display at Jacaruso Gallery capture moments of modern life, as well as embodying the modes of journalism's past. The quality and integrity of New York Times collection pre-2000, which are limited in availability, give them collectible status. The prints on view were produced in the 1980s, with the verifiable mark of the Times logo embossment. They are also the largest size prints done of their kind, while at the same time having the smallest run-count. Join us Saturday the 4th, during Rhinebeck's Sinterklaas Festivities, or catch the exhibit the following day, Sunday the 5th, during gallery hours.

Betsy Jacaruso Gallery is located in the Rhinebeck Courtyard, 43 East Market St., Suite 2, Rhinebeck NY. Gallery hours are 11 am- 5 pm Friday and Saturday, 11 - 4 pm Sunday.
