Betsy Jacaruso Gallery, located in the heart of Rhinebeck, is hosting an open reception for their entrancing new exhibit MONSTERS, featuring works by Norm Magnusson. The exhibit showcases works from Magnusson’s ongoing project he started many years ago painting monster figures on vintage postcards. Over the years he has accrued a collection of flea market, rummage sale, and thrift store finds — postcards, paintings, photographs, and reproductions alike. He then embellishes the scenes (some of which are by canonized artists like Renoir). with his imaginative creatures. His comical intrusions, along with the original thrift store framing, and even a few authentic $5- sale tags, bring a bright levity to otherwise serious pictures. 

“I started doing these years ago with the kids. I think maybe it was on a family vacation on Fire Island,” says Magnusson. “It was really fun for the whole family for, like, 17 minutes, then the kids were off to something else and I found myself here. All alone in this beautiful place.” 

An accomplished artist, curator, and public art talent, his work resides in noteworthy museum collections such as The Museum of Modern Art, The Samuel Dorsky Museum, and Museum of the City of New York.

“Over the course of the years, as my art has dealt with political and social issues and language and semiotics and other things that require a lot of head scratching from me and probably from the viewers of my creations as well,” reflects Magnusson. “Along the way, through the years, it's been nice to have a couple of bodies of work that spring forth from a place of whimsy, rather than intellect or activism. These monsters on things are certainly that. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.”
