Rhinebeck, New York – The Betsy Jacaruso Gallery is excited to announce the opening of Terra Nova // Terra Incognita, a dynamic art exhibit featuring the Rhinebeck Fine Artists group. The exhibit will open with a reception on October 19, 2024, from 5 PM to 7 PM, and will be on view until November 10, 2024.
The exhibit’s title Terra Nova // Terra Incognita serves as a point of departure for artists to explore its many connotations. Terra nova, meaning "new land," represents not only uncharted physical spaces but also the emergence of new ideas and discoveries. In this context, we are encouraged to reflect on the complex realities of new frontiers, in both thought and practice, with some artworks offering whimsical depictions while others address conflict.
Likewise, terra incognita, or "unknown land," historically refers to unmapped or unexplored regions but can extend to unfamiliar realms of knowledge, experience, and understanding. These notions of newness and the unknown—terra nova and terra incognita—invite the viewer to explore the tension between what is defined and what remains to be imagined.
The opening reception, on Saturday, October 19th, coincides with the final Rhinebeck Arts Walk of 2024. This event is free and open to the public. The Betsy Jacaruso Gallery is located in the Rhinebeck Courtyard, 43-2 East Market St., Rhinebeck, New York.
